Vietnam Fishing villages

Vietnam has a long coastline (over 3,200km) so fishing is one of the major works for the local people. Whenever I traveled to a city/town near the sea, I often asked local motorbike drivers to take me to fishing villages.

They ended up taking me to fishing ports so that I could take photos of the boats. There are various types of the boats, from simple bamboo boats to big modern ones. Other than fishing ports, fishing markets and fishing villages, I also saw prawn raising lakes and oyster raising areas for cultivated pearls.

The fishing port which has impressed me most of all is Phú Yên fishing port in south central Vietnam. The boats are big and they are used for catching tuna and other fishes. I also went to the logistic center at this port and saw the locals processing fishes before they are carried by trucks to other cities.

Fishing is a very hard work, sometimes the fishermen lost their lives in the sea. There was a sad story that my local motorbike driver told me when I visited Tam Kỳ city of Quảng Nam province. He said the logistic boat tow 10 small bamboo boats to the sea and the fishermen sit on their small boats for catching squids. The fishermen often spend 3 months for every sea trip. At night they turn on the light to get attention of squids. The weather suddenly changes bad, they may die in the sea. When the logistic boat goes back, they see empty boats. There is a fishing village with many widows in this province.

However, fishing is also a job which brings good income as the local men can sell fishes to the restaurants for making sea food.
